I just took a walk down Varick to Starbucks.
Usually as I make my way down the 4 blocks or so it is from my office to Starbucks, I always catch a glimpse of the new tower, growing each day. Today as I was walking, I reflected on the events that took place 11 years ago.
I’m sure had I been walking down the street before 9/11/2001 (I was a sophomore in college at the time) I would have had my eyes fixed on the towers, thinking about how incredible it is that I’m in New York. I would remind myself every day I saw them how blessed I am to be living in this city.
So I popped into Starbucks, ordered my usual, and then walked out and took a right to head back to work. About 5 steps in I decided to stop, turn around, and reflect, and most importantly, remember.
As I looked towards the sky something caught my eye. A passing cloud caught a rainbow!
Was I the only one seeing it?! It seemed too perfect to be real! Somewhere in those 10 seconds as I frantically snapped what I was seeing, I couldn’t help but feel the past and the present all tied together in that one beautiful moment.
And while I’m guessing what I saw was a divinely timed reflection of the sun from the Freedom Tower, it is certainly a moment, along with that morning 11 years ago, that I will never forget.
